Babylon 5 returns with animation
(The Road Home)

2024.05.13

The science fiction series Babylon 5 is not to everyone's tastes. If you ask someone who loves this work what they like so much about it, everyone will likely give a different answer. Still, if I had to pick just one great thing about this franchise, I would say the level of perfection that permeates the entire work.

Although it has already been more than 15 years since the most recent Babylon 5 story was screened, still has this stable level of completion. is the first animated film in the Babylon 5 franchise, directed by Matt Peters (a veteran director who has directed various DC Comics original animation projects) and written by Straczynski. It not only presents a new story, but also adds to the existing story. Diversity and depth are once again shown. It is a work that reminds you of the past rather than a work that opens new horizons, but through this work, you will surely realize again why you liked the series called Babylon 5.

Animation was particularly advantageous in staging this reunion. Director Peters and Straczynski were also well aware of the various benefits that could be gained by presenting characters through animation. From a narrative perspective, Babylon 5 had never received a large budget when it aired, so was given the opportunity to show epic scenes that the existing series could not handle. Peters did a great job directing, using zip-in/out during action scenes, active camera movement around characters talking, and advancing the story into areas that the existing series could not. The series' nemesis, the alien species Shadow, has become much more numerous and has a more frightening look, and the battle sequences feature tremendous action that has never been seen in previous works. Animation was a very suitable format for Babylon 5, so much so that animation was said to be the reason why the adventures experienced by characters from the past and present appeared more dynamically. The door has been opened for them to come back with more animation works.
